He attempts to describe the complicated relationships between humans and the animals they raise for slaughter, for labor and for companionship, and draws connections between the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China by allied international forces and the savagery of killing and eating animals. Meat production is perceived as an obstacle to shared lives of greater beauty and aesthetic harmony – as Reclus writes, “we hope before long that flesh-eaters will at least have the politeness to hide their food. Slaughter houses are relegated to distant suburbs ; let the butchers’ shops be placed there too, where, like stables, they shall be concealed in obscure corners.”
